Successful Completion of the Project “Sustainable Food Security and Awareness on Gold Mining Effects” in Brownsweg
With the formal closure of the project “Sustainable Food Security and Awareness on Gold Mining Effects” by Tropenbos Suriname (TBS), an important step has been taken toward promoting sustainable income generation and environmental awareness in the Brokopondo district. The closing event took place on April 15 during a krutu in Nw. Ganze, Brownsweg, marking a meaningful moment for all involved.
Over a period of seven months, farmers affiliated with the agricultural cooperative Everest U.A. received intensive training in various agroforestry techniques. These techniques integrate forestry and agriculture in a way that balances ecological sustainability with economic viability. This transfer of knowledge has laid the foundation for a transition to more environmentally friendly farming practices in areas traditionally dependent on small-scale gold mining.
The implementation of the project was made possible through the financial support of the EMSAGS project, which focuses on promoting mercury-free gold mining in Suriname. A key objective within EMSAGS is to encourage alternative and sustainable sources of income for communities that are socio-economically linked to gold mining activities. Agroforestry, as a viable alternative, aligns perfectly with this goal by reducing ecological harm and strengthening local food security.
