Validation Workshop National Strategy for Small-Scale Gold Mining 2026–2036

An important output of the Improving Environmental Management in the Mining Sector of Suriname, with Emphasis on Gold Mining (EMSAGS) Project is the development of a national strategy for a sustainable small-scale gold mining sector. In this context, the project supports the Ministry of Natural Resources (NH) in drafting this strategy. NDE Training & Consultancy has been brought on board for its execution. In close cooperation with representatives from the Ministry of NH, the National Environmental Authority (NMA), the EMSAGS Project, technical experts, and sector stakeholders, a draft strategy has been developed.

On May 25, 2026, the validation workshop for the National Strategy for Small-Scale Gold Mining in Suriname 2026–2036 took place. The meeting was officially opened by the Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. David Abiamofo, who in his speech emphasized the importance of participation, transparency, inclusivity, equal opportunities, and responsible governance in the further development of the sector.

The workshop brought together a broad group of stakeholders to validate the strategy, identify challenges and opportunities, and create support for its implementation.

The central objective of the strategy is to transform the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector into a responsible, formal, and sustainable sector. This focuses on technological innovation, environmental management, health and safety, effective monitoring and enforcement, community development, and strengthening governance and formalization.

With this strategy, Suriname is taking an important step toward a future where economic development goes hand in hand with environmental protection, social responsibility, and sustainable development for current and future generations.
